The Dallas Cowboys have concerns at running back, and Derrick Henry could be the answer. Henry is one of the league’s most famous running backs, and while he plans his next move, his training takes him to Dallas.
On January 27, @LawsNation generated buzz by posting a video of Henry training at the SandersFit Performance Center. The Tennessee Titans running back is shown conducting a range of workouts with a trainer at the facility.
“The #Cowboys should consider adding Derrick Henry to their roster,” the text of the post reads. “The former #Titans running back is currently engaged in offseason training alongside Dr. Ashley Reichert, PT, DPT, at @SandersFit in Dallas, TX. As a free agent, Henry would be an excellent acquisition to the Cowboys.
Henry is likely to leave the Titans and pursue free agency after joining the team in 2016. After Tennessee’s final regular-season game, he thanked supporters in what appeared to be a farewell speech.
However, it is vital to understand that Henry joining the Cowboys is pure speculation. In fact, SI.com’s Mike Fisher claims that Dallas is not “currently” interested in signing the four-time Pro Bowler.

If the Cowboys choose free agency over the NFL draft for their next RB, they could do much worse than Henry. Despite celebrated his 30th birthday lately, he has remained effective.
According to Pro Football Reference, Henry averaged 4.2 yards per carry last season, finishing with 1167 running yards and 12 touchdowns. Of course, Henry isn’t putting up those numbers without getting a lot of touches (he led the league with 280 rushes), but despite being the clear focal point of Tennessee’s offense, he was consistently productive.
Dallas or any possible bidder is unlikely to be able to replicate Henry’s 2027-yard season in 2020, but teams appear to understand the value of a two-back scheme.
After Ezekiel Elliott was released in 2023, the Cowboys moved on from that. They used Tony Pollard as a lead back and were significantly less effective. Dallas had over 400 less yards on the ground and an average than in 2022.Each try yields 2 yards less.
Henry Could Be A Reasonably Priced Option For Cowboys.
While Dallas will need to take substantial steps to provide contract extensions and sign players, Henry should be available at a reasonable price. Despite the fact that he is nearing the end of a four-year, $50 million contract, he is anticipated to accept a significant pay cut.
Spotrac estimates his compensation at $4.3 million. Given his track record, it seems like a tiny investment. Even if the Cowboys signed Henry as a secondary back, his ability in short-yardage situations would be invaluable.
However, any team interested in Henry will need to address those questions. Should he be receiving approximately 15 handoffs per game as he enters his 30th season? Will he want to sign with a team if he’s not the first choice?
Whether or whether the Cowboys pursue Henry, his free agency will be closely watched.
