Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive lineman, intercepts Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff during a crucial defensive play.
Christian McCaffrey’s touchdown puts the 49ers on the board; Lions lead 14-7.
The 49ers are on the board.
San Francisco got the key drive it needed to stay alive in the first half, with Christian McCaffrey blasting into the end zone for a 2-yard score.
On the second play of the possession, quarterback Brock Purdy completed a beautiful off-schedule pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk, gaining 23 yards to the Detroit 46.
McCaffrey then took over the drive, converting a third-and-two with a 5-yard run to finish the first quarter. He then began the second quarter with a 28-yard catch and dash down the left sideline, eluding defenders.
A play later, McCaffrey scored from right in the middle.
Jake Moody kicked an extra point after missing a 48-yard field goal wide right to end the 49ers’ first possession.
Lions standout Jameson Williams receives a salute from Marvin Harrison Jr. following his amazing touchdown against the 49ers.
On Sunday afternoon, Jameson Williams and the upstart Detroit Lions traveled to San Francisco to face the 49ers in the NFC Championship, with the winner advancing to the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs on February 11 in Las Vegas. Williams has been an integral part of the Lions’ overhauled offense since he returned to the team in Week 5 after serving a gambling suspension to begin the season, and the former Alabama Crimson Tide standout wasted no time making his presence felt in the Bay Area.
Less than two minutes into the game, the Lions were quickly moving, and quarterback Jared Goff passed the ball over to Williams on a trick play intended to misdirect the San Francisco defenders. Williams then seized the ball and used his otherworldly speed to blast past numerous 49ers defenders before stumbling all the way into the end zone, giving the Lions an early 7-0 lead in a game that few, if any, pundits predicted they would win.
In fact, the play was so exciting that Ohio State football wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who is expected to be a top draft pick later this spring, took to X, the social networking site formerly known as Twitter, to share his delight.
