This morning, Robby and Rexrode featured Brian Callahan, the new head coach of the Tennessee Titans. When the new league year begins in March, Derrick Henry will become a free agent, so they asked him about him. This was Callahan’s response:
Derrick Henry is the kind of player who works in any offense. He’s been an incredible athlete. He has long served as the franchise’s face in this area.
One thinks of Derrick Henry while considering the Tennessee Titans. He is deserving of that. If having him back would be convenient for us. A gifted player will always have my full support. Crucially, he has also demonstrated a strong leadership style in this building.
Every player has something useful to offer. There isn’t a system of offense that would argue against Derrick Henry being here. We’ll see where that goes, but I do believe he has some gas left in him. Most likely, he will go out on the market to see what options are available to him.
I would never say to a player like that if they want to return here and it fits for us. He’s such a fantastic person on top of it and has meant so much to this city that I would never just say no to that.
Although that is a very thoughtful and well-thought-out response, it still seems unlikely that Henry will be playing for the Titans in 2024. If Henry was still under contract with the Titans, Callahan would definitely figure out a way to make him a great offensive player. However, given the possible scheme and remarks Henry made on Bussin with the Boys about wanting to play for a team that could win a Super Bowl, a reunion doesn’t seem likely. It’s difficult to envision a situation in which the Titans, at least theoretically, appear to have that opportunity in 2024.
