Derrick Henry might be the answer to the questions the Dallas Cowboys need to answer at running back. As he plans his next move, Henry—one of the league’s most known running backs—is being trained in Dallas.
On January 27, @LawsNation sparked discussion by posting a video of Henry working out at the SandersFit Performance Center. The Tennessee Titans running back is seen working out in different ways inside the facility with a trainer.
The post says, “The #Cowboys should think about adding Derrick Henry to their roster.” The former running back for the Titans is working out throughout the offseason at @SandersFit in Dallas, Texas, with Dr. Ashley Reichert, PT, DPT. Henry would be a fantastic acquisition to the Cowboys as a free agent.
After initially joining the Titans in 2016, Henry is anticipated to leave the organization and explore free agency. In what felt like a farewell statement, he thanked supporters in retrospect following Tennessee’s last regular season game.
It’s crucial to keep in mind, though, that this is just conjecture and that Henry might sign with the Cowboys. In fact, SI.com’s Mike Fisher is even suggesting that Dallas is not “currently” interested in signing the four-time Pro Bowler.
Derrick Henry Is Still Performing Well in 2023
The Cowboys could do much worse than Henry if they choose to look to free agency rather than the NFL draft for their next running back. He recently celebrated turning thirty, but he’s still got it together.
Henry had an average of 4.2 yards per carry last season, which led to 1167 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, according to Pro Football Reference. Henry led the league with 280 rushes, so it goes without saying that he isn’t reaching those totals without receiving a ton of touches, but even while he was clearly Tennessee’s offensive centerpiece, he was still putting up big numbers.
Teams appear to understand the value of a two-back scheme, even though Henry won’t be able to return to the level of his 2027-yard season in 2020 with Dallas or any other potential suitor.
After Ezekiel Elliott was released in 2023, the Cowboys were able to avoid that. They were significantly less productive with Tony Pollard as a lead back. Dallas averaged and gained over 400 fewer yards on the ground in 2022 than they did in 2022.each attempt, two yards less.
Henry Might Be A Fairly Priced Choice for Cowboys.
Henry should be available for a fair price, even though Dallas needs to take big action in order to provide contract extensions and make additions. Despite concluding a four-year, $50 million contract, he is anticipated to accept a substantial wage decrease.
According to Spotrac, he will make $4.3 million in pay. Given his past performance, it seems like a small investment. Henry would be a great asset to the Cowboys even if they signed him as a secondary back because of his short-yardage skills.
However, there are questions there that any team interested in Henry must address. When he starts his 30th season, should he be receiving about 15 handoffs every game? If he isn’t the first option but rather the backup, will he want to sign with a team?
Henry’s free agency story will be interesting to follow whether or not the Cowboys give it any attention.
