Pittsburgh — Despite suggestions that he will be considered, a well-known name is apparently missing from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive coordinator list. During an appearance on 105.9 The X with Mark Madden, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette stated that the Steelers are not considering Kliff Kingsbury as a contender for the open offensive coordinator position. “Kliff Kingsbury, despite what you’re hearing, is not on their list,” Dulac said. “Now, that’s not saying it [won’t] change, but they have a list of candidates and he is not on their list.”

NBC Sports’ Peter King reported only last week that the Steelers and Chicago Bears were scheduled to speak with Kingsburry about their offensive coordinator jobs. Kingsbury is currently a Senior Offensive Analyst at USC, where he has helped develop Caleb Williams, a projected first-round pick in 2024. And his track record as a quarterback coach is impressive; Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes, and Kyler Murray have all thrived under Kingsburry’s guidance. The Steelers have already reached out to a few candidates. They interviewed Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson. Their most recent interview was with Jerrod Johnson, the Texans’ quarterbacks coach.

Steelers interview Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson for offensive coordinator position.

Jerrod Johnson, the Houston Texans’ quarterbacks coach, is the second candidate to interview for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ open offensive coordinator post, the organization confirmed Friday.

Johnson, 35, spent the spring and training camp with the Steelers as their fourth quarterback in 2012. Johnson had brief stints with five other NFL organizations but never appeared in a regular-season game.

Johnson oversaw Houston’s C.J. Stroud’s outstanding rookie season in 2023, his only season with the Texans and as a head NFL quarterback coach. Stroud, the likely NFL offensive rookie of the year, led the Texans to the AFC South title with 4,108 passing yards, a 23-to-5 touchdown to interception ratio, and a passer rating of 100.8.

Johnson previously served as an offensive quality control coach for the Indianapolis Colts and the Minnesota Vikings before joining the Texans.

As a player, Johnson beat out future Pro Bowl quarterback Ryan Tannehill at Texas A&M and left with numerous relevant career throwing records.

Johnson, who has never worked as a coordinator at any level, is the Steelers’ second candidate revealed as having been interviewed, following Thomas Brown. Brown was the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator last year.
