Falcons: Chargers allegedly close on deal with Jim Harbaugh.
The Falcons have arranged a second interview with Jim Harbaugh, the 2023 National Champion head coach. However, much like with the recently hired Brian Callahan, they may not even have a chance to conduct it.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Chargers are nearing an agreement with Jim Harbaugh to be the next head coach in Los Angeles.
Jim Harbaugh was at the top of my list of probable head coach possibilities for the Falcons. He has an impressive resume, as does Bill Belichick. Harbaugh transformed Stanford into a contender, nearly took the 49ers to the Super Bowl on several occasions, and later won the National Championship at Michigan. That’s a fantastic track record of success; additionally, he’s a decade younger than Belichick and comes from an offensive background recognized for getting the most out of his players on that side of the ball.
However, Jim Harbaugh was long considered the most appealing possible head coaching choice. He had plenty of admirers and could always return to Michigan if he couldn’t locate a landing location he wanted. The fact that Jim Harbaugh only interviewed with the Chargers and Falcons out of all the positions is intriguing. Atlanta appeared to be in the race, but it appears that dream is going to be crushed.
It’s interesting to see where this leaves the Falcons going ahead. Of all the finalists, Harbaugh appeared to have the best chance of persuading Arthur Blank to go against Bill Belichick. If Blank is going to do that, he will most likely have to hire a rookie head coach.
This is not surprising given Blank’s track record. The Falcons have not employed an experienced head coach since 1997. Having saying that, the current hiring cycle feels different. Blank is 81 years old and wants to win right now. Putting his trust back in a rookie head coach does not appear to be his favored option, but he may not have one.
