Andy Hinchcliffe was perplexed by Illan Meslier during the first half of Leeds United’s match against Preston North End, noticing that the fans were moaning at the goalie at one point.

Illan Meslier had a mixed first half. Leeds fell behind within 70 seconds. And the Whites did not appear convincing when the visitors used set pieces.

Meslier did make a spectacular stop to deny Liam Millar at the near post. However, the Frenchman managed to irritate the fans shortly after the half-hour mark.

Illan Meslier irritates Leeds fans during the first half at Preston.
Preston had a free kick out wide that may have been directed into the penalty area. However, the shot was overhit on a windy afternoon in West Yorkshire, and the ball appeared to be moving safely towards Meslier.

However, the Leeds goalkeeper chose not to collect the ball and instead punched it clear, leaving the home side with more work to do to eliminate the threat.

There were loud groans within the ground. And, commenting on Sky Sports (broadcast on 21/1; 12:33), Andy Hinchcliffe argued that the fans’ frustrations were understandable.

“The fans’ reaction reveals everything. Why are you punching something? “Just catch it,” he instructed.

“He is under no pressure. Why on earth are you punching that clear while keeping the ball alive to some extent? “There is no need for it.”

A question mark remains over Whites’ goalkeeper.
It’s understandable that supporters may be concerned about the 23-year-old. There’s little doubt that he can make some great stops. Meslier made incredible saves against Leicester City and Sunderland this season.

However, he has not been able to silence his critics.

In some ways, it feels comparable to when Leeds made a strong start under Thomas Christiansen and Felix Wiedwald was able to keep a number of clean sheets despite not having much to do.

The issues began when Wiedwald was tested. And it rapidly became clear that the German was not up to the job.

Meslier is a significantly superior goalkeeper than Wiedwald. There is simply no question. But Leeds’ good form this season should not deter people from scrutinizing Meslier when he is tested.

There are instances when he has questionable possession. And it’s apparent that his decision-making is still in progress.

As the campaign nears its conclusion, this could be a source of concern.
