Santa Clara has received terrible news. Jason Verrett has a shoulder injury that necessitates rotator cuff surgery, according to Kyle Shanahan. Verrett has suffered his sixth season-ending injury.

Verrett was expected to play a significant amount of snaps in Sunday’s season finale against the Los Angeles Rams. After his return late this season, the team was vocal in its support for Verrett.

In a week focused on health, preparing for backups, and preparing for their divisional opponent in Wild Card week, this injury casts a pall over the team.

The injury occurred during practice when Verrett attempted a pass and fell on his shoulder. Verrett finished practice to avoid an MRI, according to David Lombardi, but the tests confirmed the worst-case scenario.

Verrett’s return provided veteran depth to the 49ers secondary. Unfortunately, his season has come to an end. It was absolutely heartbreaking.

Shanahan went on to explain the injury:

“It was. He was going to be on the field a lot. He landed on his shoulder yesterday and now needs rotator cuff surgery. We all know that when he tore his ACL in Week One on that turf in Detroit, it took him about a year and a half to recover. Last year on the field, he ruptured his Achilles. He had been working on his butt off all week. We planned to use him extensively in this game. He’s been fantastic here for the past month. He jumped up to catch a ball and landed awkwardly on his shoulder. It happens to a lot of guys, so it’s heartbreaking for him, but it was also a shoulder injury. It wasn’t as bad as a knee or a leg, but you still need surgery for that. So he discovered that this morning.”
