The Cleveland Browns have re-signed defensive end Sam Kamara to the practice squad, just a week after releasing him.

The Browns announced Kamara’s signing along with a number of other moves. The team also released practice squad punter Matt Haack and guard Joey Fisher.

Kamara is in his second NFL season after graduating from Stony Brook. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears in 2021 and has played in 10 games. He spent the majority of 2022 and 2023 on the Browns’ practice squad, making one appearance this season.

Kamara could be activated to the active roster this week against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Browns have nothing to lose in Week 18 and could rest key starters like Myles Garrett and Za’Darius Smith.

“We’re working through all of those things,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said on Monday, January 1. “Of course, we’ll have a plan. We want to finish strong, so we’ll have a plan in place, but I’ll keep you updated as the week progresses.”

The Browns are dealing with defensive line injuries.

In recent weeks, the Browns’ defensive line has been harmed. Veteran tackle Maurice Hurst is out for the season, and Ogbo Okoronkwo has a pec injury. Okoronkwo is hopeful that he will be able to play in the postseason. He’s been out the last two games.

The Browns are also without starting middle linebacker Anthony Walker and safety Grant Delpit, who is on injured reserve but hopes to return in time for the playoffs.

“I don’t know,” Stefanski replied when asked about his injured players. “Obviously, we’ll see how all of those guys progress over the next few weeks.” You obviously want all of those guys back, but we’ll have to wait and see how they do over the next seven to fourteen days.”

Garrett has been injured as well, but he has yet to miss a game. The favorite for Defensive Player of the Year has been out with a shoulder injury. Last week, he snapped his sackless streak against the New York Jets. Garrett would be one of the first players to be rested if the Browns rest players against the Bengals.

Having said that, the sack-hungry All-Pro might want another chance to score in the final week of the season. This season, Garrett has 14 sacks.

Browns punter Corey Bojorquez is expected to return.

Last week, the Browns were without their starting kicker and punter. Dustin Hopkins is out with a left hamstring injury, and Corey Bojorquez is out with a quad injury.

The decision to waive Haack, who punted against the Jets on Thursday, suggests that Bojorquez is on his way back. Haack punted three times against New York, averaging 51.7 yards.
It will be nice to have Bojorquez back, but Hopkins is a big missing piece for the Browns. In a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team only gave up a seventh-round pick for Hopkins. He’s been the team’s most dependable kicker in over a decade.
