MAJOR BREAKING: Kings Offseason in Turmoil as Blockbuster Trade on Horizon

The Sacramento Kings have already made notable moves in the 2025 offseason, but their activity may be far from over. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the team is expected to explore trade opportunities for veteran wing and six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan.

“With Sacramento now under new leadership, all eyes are on what the franchise may do next,” Fischer wrote via The Stein Line. “Since the hiring of Scott Perry as general manager, there’s been consistent chatter suggesting the Kings are likely to test the trade market for DeRozan.”

While the Kings may be able to part with DeRozan and still remain in the playoff mix, there could be deeper concerns looming. Back in March, The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Anthony Slater reported that three-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis may seek clarity this offseason regarding the franchise’s long-term vision.

“Sources around the league say Sabonis, who has three years and roughly $140.3 million remaining on his deal, wants to better understand the team’s plans moving forward,” The Athletic reported. “Much like De’Aaron Fox had questions about decision-making power and who the team’s leadership truly trusted, Sabonis is thought to have similar concerns.”

With Scott Perry now running basketball operations and BJ Armstrong serving as assistant general manager, the direction of the Kings remains unclear. Despite this uncertainty, Perry has insisted that Sacramento is not planning a rebuild and remains committed to being a competitive team in the Western Conference.

Still, the offseason could prove to be unpredictable. In fact, Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes recently ranked all 30 NBA teams based on the potential for offseason “chaos,” placing the Kings at No. 10 on the list.

“Domantas Sabonis’ uncertainty about the franchise’s trajectory — especially following the De’Aaron Fox trade and the exit of former GM Monte McNair — only adds fuel to the fire,” Hughes wrote. “Aside from a rare moment of stability during the 2022–23 season, which resulted in a playoff berth, the Kings have often been plagued by impulsive decisions and short-term thinking under owner Vivek Ranadivé. As long as he’s steering the ship, expect turbulence.”

A photo from December 2024 captured a moment of camaraderie between Sabonis and DeRozan before a game against the San Antonio Spurs — a reminder of what could soon become a memory if the front office decides to shake things up.

There’s no doubt that the Kings remain well behind the true contenders in the Western Conference. Another summer without meaningful change could deepen frustrations in Sacramento. Owner Vivek Ranadivé brought in Perry with the hope of steering the team in a new, more successful direction — and this offseason will be a pivotal test of that vision.

While no team actively seeks drama during the summer, a dose of controlled chaos may be exactly what Sacramento needs to reset its course. With trade rumors swirling and star players asking big questions, the Kings are on the verge of a defining stretch in their franchise’s story.
